What are cleaning products for?

As the name suggests, cleaning products or hygiene products are products designed to remove dirt from different surfaces and disinfect them. In short, they are products whose main purpose is to keep a room, a piece of furniture, a surface or a material good free of stains, dust, mould, damp, bacteria, among others.

What are cleaning products made of?

Generally, disinfectant cleaning products are composed of chemical elements, most of them water-soluble, and therefore of toxic origin (i.e. they cannot be ingested or inhaled). Some of the ingredients usually contained in cleaning products are:

  • Phthalates
  • Sodium hypochlorite
  • Ammonia
  • Chlorine
  • Alcohol
  • Butoxyethanol
  • Quaternary ammonium

The list may vary depending on the type of product (degreaser, detergent, disinfectant, stain remover...) but most cleaning products usually contain this kind of elements. For this reason, most of them are recommended not to be placed near children or pets, as their ingestion or prolonged inhalation could seriously damage their health.

How can cleaning products be classified according to their pH?

All chemical cleaning products are categorised according to the type of pH (hydrogen potential) they contain. Depending on this pH level, cleaning products can be divided into three different categories:

  • Acidic cleaning products: these are those whose pH level is between 0-6. These products are specialised in removing grease, rust, limescale and various types of stains or dirt from various surfaces. Normally, kitchen and bathroom cleaning products fall into this category.

  • Neutral cleaning products: these are hygiene products whose pH value is 7-8. They are called neutral because their composition is not capable of damaging or altering the shine or varnish of wood, marble or glass surfaces. All-purpose cleaners or typical floor cleaners with natural fragrances are an example of this kind of product.

  • Alkaline cleaning products: within this category we find those products that have a pH of 9-14. These products are usually used to degrease and disinfect machinery (car engines, ovens), surfaces or even fabrics (although with the risk of discolouring them). The clearest example is bleach, which has a high pH (13) or industrial machinery cleaners.

Types of cleaning products

In addition to their pH value, cleaning products can be classified in other ways. Usually they can be divided into two different categories:

  • Household cleaning products: these are products intended for the correct hygiene and disinfection of the home. This category includes kitchen cleaning products, bathroom cleaning products, car cleaning products, etc.
  • Wholesale cleaning products: these are hygiene and disinfection products manufactured on a large scale (i.e. large size) generally intended for companies and businesses.
  • Industrial cleaning products: cleaning products made for cleaning machinery in factories and manufacturing industries. These products are not usually sold to private customers, but companies usually buy them directly from the manufacturer or distributor.
  • Professional cleaning products: these are hygiene and disinfection products aimed at cleaning professionals. They are usually very specialised products (for example, products for removing carpet stains, for eliminating damp) that are not usually found for sale in supermarkets.
  • Eco-friendly cleaning products: these are cleaning products made from 100% organic elements, i.e. they do not contain chemical substances in their composition. They are usually more expensive than chemical cleaning products.
